I’ve just realised that, in a reversal of the normal situation, I’ve not written a music post for quite some time now. But, as it’s late and I’ve been online all day (what with the #uksnow), I wanted something that I could just post & forget which means a song that I love, but most people should know already. So here’s Lily Allen’s new single The Fear.
I first wrote about The Fear in relation to the ‘furore’ around Lily Allen’s Britney cover and in the intervening time it would seem that it’s got to #1. Whilst some people think that Allen is of no substance I have to say that her popularity fills me with confidence as it suggests that people are quite happy to buy intelligent, well produced contemporary pop music, with witty lyrics and absolutely no connection to Simon Cowell.
As with the best tracks off her debut, The Fear has Lily Allen drawling razor sharp lines in her voice which positively reek of 21st Century ennui . Take this particular favourite of mine for example:
Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
It’s all about fast cars cussing each other
But it doesn’t matter cause I’m packing plastic
and that’s what makes my life so fucking fantastic
All of this and an incessant guitar line that’s so catchy you could use it to hook a fish. What’s not to like?
Yep, I’d say Lily Allen has nothing to fear if this single is anything to go by.
